Chrysler and German driveline and chassis component supplier ZF have reached an agreement that will see ZF supply and license manufacturing rights to its 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission for use in Chrysler vehicles, including potential application in Ram full-size pickups.
The 8HP gearbox is already used in Dodge Charger 8HP and the Dodge Challenger  GT.
The transmission uses four planetary gearsets and five shifting elements (multi-disc clutches and brakes). It's not a dual-clutch transmission but ZF says shifts can be performed in only 200 milliseconds. It can manage up to 516 pounds-feet of torque.
Using an eight-speed transmission has two big advantages: improved fuel economy and shorter gear steps between cogs, for quicker acceleration and smoother shifts.

ZF 8HP transmission




The ZF 8HP is an eight-speed automatic transmission designed and built by ZF Friedrichshafen AG's subsidiary in Saarbrücken. It had its debut in the new BMW 7 Series 760Li saloon fitted with the V12 engine and since then each new BMW model in all Series down to the 1 Series in rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive version was equipped with it.

One of its main aims is to improve vehicle fuel economy, and it can achieve an 11% saving compared to ZF-6 speed transmission and 14% versus modern 5-speed transmissions. Due to changes in internal design, shift times have reduced to 200 milliseconds, along with the ability to shift in a non-sequential manner - going from 8th to 2nd in extreme situations. In the 8HP70 version, it has a torque handling limit of 700 newton metres (516 lbf·ft), and weighs 90 kilograms (198 lb).

Future development will see two four-wheel drive versions available, with version destined for Volkswagen Group applications, using a Torsen centre differential. It will be able to encompass a torque range from 300 newton metres (221 lbf·ft) to 1,000 newton metres (738 lbf·ft), and will be available for use in middle class cars, through to large luxury sport utility vehicles.                      



Chrysler Group LLC initially received the 8HP 8-speed automatic transmissions from the ZF Getriebe GmbH plant in Saarbrücken, Germany. By 2013, in parallel with Chrysler Group, ZF has set up a new transmission production plant in North America, where the 8-speed transmissions will be produced.  ZF Friedrichshafen and Chrysler Group have reached a supply and license agreement for ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler Group is licensed to produce the 8HP at the company’s Kokomo Transmission Plant and the Kokomo Casting plant, starting in 2013.

ZF designed the 8HP to replace the 6HP—of which over 5 million have been produced—and, in doing so, made the new transmission identical not only in dimension but also in weight (200 pounds). This is an important consideration, as the six-speed is widely employed in the luxury-sport ranks. The 6HP will be out of production by 2014.


ZF says the 8HP is six percent more ­efficient than the outgoing sixer and nearly as efficient as a dual-clutch automated manual, which ZF also produces. However, the eight-speed is roughly 20 percent cheaper and retains the smooth, torque-converter starts to which U.S. buyers have become accustomed. Furthermore, the 8HP has a system to maintain hydraulic pressure even when the engine isn’t running and is therefore the first automatic that’s compatible with stop-start operation—good for 11 percent better fuel efficiency, says ZF. In the CAFE-conscious U.S. market, every percentage point is going to count.

The Toyota Corolla is a compact/subcompact car that, in 1997, became the world's top-selling nameplate; more than 35 million Toyota Corolla vehicles have been sold over the past 45 years.
Sports car technology was adopted for the transmission, and the vehicle was equipped with a 4-speed fully-synchronized manual transmission with a floor type gear change lever. This marked the first time that this type of transmission was adopted in a Japanese vehicle, and a sporty, direct shifting feel was achieved. In addition, Japan's first floor-mounted 2-speed automatic transmission and a steering column-mounted 4-speed manual transmission, already familiar in other vehicles, were made available.

The standard four-cylinder engine revs smoothly and delivers good acceleration performance. Corolla earns an EPA-estimated 32/40 mpg City/Highway when equipped with a manual transmission, while the automatic gets 30/38 mpg.. Both the manual and the automatic transmissions offer smooth shifting, and the manual is very easy to operate. All models have a smooth, comfortable ride and responsive handling.
The new Corolla Axio is available with either a 1.3-liter 1NR-FE or 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE four cylinder engines; front or all-wheel drive. Both 5-speed manual and CVT transmissions are offered. The 1.3-liter engine and all-wheel drive variants are available only with the CVT transmission. The Corolla Fielder is available with 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE or 1.8-liter 2ZR-FAE four cylinder engines mated with a CVT transmission. The 1.5-liter is available with front and all-wheel drive, the 1.8-liter is offered only in front-wheel drive.

Eleventh generation (E160) 2014

The base model Corolla L is offered with a four-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. The six-speed manual is also available in the Corolla S.

A six-speed manual transmission is available on the Corolla L and S grades. Drive modes that offer re-calibrated throttle, transmission and steering responses are available on the Corolla LE Eco and Corolla S. For ECO drive mode on the LE Eco, the initial throttle inputs are less sensitive to help encourage more fuel-efficient driving and eliminate sudden starts. On the S grade, the SPORT mode software helps make the accelerator pedal feel more responsive to input along with CVTi-S shifting logic that enhances acceleration feel. In sport mode, Corolla's electronic power steering is programmed to offer a more positive steering feel.


The unibody makes extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel to help keep vehicle weight below 2,900 pounds in the interest of fuel economy. In addition to improved collision performance, such construction also gives the Corolla's structure increased rigidity to optimize chassis and suspension performance, giving the new car a more responsive and engaging driving experience.
